Trance to the fourth power is what we’re looking at today. You may remember back a year and a half ago, when we covered the release of Chinese master ALIGASH‘s eyes-closed wonder track ‘Quicksand‘. It was a song that marked our years, and, to me, definitely made it to the top Trance tracks released in 2024. Today, however, as time has passed, four excellent artists have had a go at it, and steered it in new directions. Amon Vision, the label behind the original release, and also the curators of today’s EP, have been preserving and pushing the sounds that make Trance so special for years on end. And the artists they’ve invited to play with ‘Quicksand’ are nothing short of mesmerising: Paul Skelton, Rodrigo Deem, Edlan, and Once Again. The package contains four special remixes, all different, and all with their own unique flavour: Uplifting front and centre with Paul Skelton, Big Room old school Trance from the hands of Rodrigo Deem, into the Drum & Bass realm with Edlan, and taking a Breakbeat detour with Once Again. Pure and pounding, Skelton takes the original track in the same highway as it was born in, but taking the faster lane. More energy, more goosebumps, more festival energy. Now that we’re in the middle of Luminosity, this one would — and will — go down really really well. Argentinian Rodrigo Deem, on the heels of his latest ‘Miramar’ single released on the Aussie label, returns with a Progressive Trance take that resembles the 2010s movement that was as energetic as it was bigroom-ish. Pointy, crispy percussion accompany fly-away synths taking the ALIGASH original into a new direction. And if new directions we’re speaking of, let me introduce you to Edlan’s. Some say Drum & Bass has a soul that is very similar to Trance’s, in the sense that it allows for feelings to be expressed through its carrying percussive body. Edlan’s take on ‘Quicksand’ is just that — an explosion of feelings, transferred from 138 BPM to something resembling the high 160s. Closing the package we have Once Again’s version, which masterfully translates the four on the floor style of the ALIGASH original into a broken beat, something that feels taken out from a dreamy sequence. The track lets you fly away and unwind in a sea of old school sounds and ethereal pads. Definitely one for the books, this one. ‘Quicksand‘ was already one of the most stunning tracks I’d heard in a while, so I’m happy to see it making the news again, now under the guidance of four new trailblazers.
