This is probably one of the most complex, deepest, and most heartfelt songs to be released in this corner of music. Every once in a while, a track comes along that stops you in your tracks because it feels so enriched, so deeply layered, that it sticks out like a sore thumb against the formulaic music we hear every day — like a sore thumb in the best way possible. That’s what Nicholas Gunn has done with his new single, ‘I Feel‘. We’ve covered Nick before, we’ve sat down with him for an incredible interview, and this song is precisely what you’d expect from a man with a 35-year legacy. However, ‘I Feel’ also represents a milestone for Nick, one of the most passionate people I’ve ever met in music. The man who enticed the entire world in the 90s with his legendary Music of the Grand Canyon album, a best-selling CD in 1995, has done something he’d never done before: he’s gone in front of the microphone and recorded his own vocals. In a day and age where technology has gone from a tool to help, to a tool to cut down times, to a low-effort resource for basically everyone, passionate or not, Nick takes full pride in the fact that this is 100% organic. No AI. No shortcuts. Just the engineering, the mixing, and the heart of a perfectionist. And the tens of takes needed to actually get a vocal sounding as you’d want to. Nick himself explains it: In 2025, I spent countless hours recording my own vocals in various key signatures, singing melodies in many ranges, experimenting with my tone and lyrical phrasing, learning how to strengthen my voice, and how to get my vocals sounding just right in the mix. It took me countless hours just to reach an acceptable bar. Not 2 minutes with a verbal prompt to an AI engine. Some music artists will think it’s a poor use of my time in an artificial world. But I didn’t study at the Royal Academy of Music to ever believe AI would be a suitable outlet to express my creativity. -Nicholas Gunn. And honestly? ‘I Feel’ makes you feel things. From those signature tribal percussion stabs to the elevating pads, the piece is made to transport you somehwere else. Maybe a physical, place, but also a psychological picture painted by, what I’d say are the two singers of this song: Nick, and his flute. Both elements have been washed out in such a way that they feel like they’re being played on the edge of a distant canyon, painting a picture of worry, perhaps sorrow, perhaps solitude, but also hope. Distant, yet undeniable hope. And it’s right here where his voice, uniquely his, falling outside of any definition I can give you, shines through. Do you know how you could probably describe 95% of the modern vocalists’ voices into some sort of template? Well, I can’t really box Nick’s voice anywhere. I remember him telling me something about being unique during our interview with him, and well, he just proved that he knows how to achieve that. His timbre, his way of singing, his emotion, truly is unique. Here. I found the section of the interview I was talking about: I think the more original you are as an artist, the stronger of case you have. Originality is everything and getting on stage and showing that originality in a live setting only supports the cause even more. If you can pick up an instrument and show people that you’re playing those parts, that is your sound, that you came first, you’re going to be fine. Stay the course, be highly original, play instruments that no one else is doing and if they are already doing it, do it in a way that no one else is doing it. -Nicholas Gunn, in our exclusive interview with him. When I listen to this, it makes me fly. There is worry in his voice, even despair, but somehow there is hope. It separates your mind from your body and puts you in a space that feels magical and mythical. It’s one of the best things I’ve heard in a long time, because every single word, and every single element, and every single reverb, was a choice made for a reason. This is Nicholas Gunn at his most authentic, and it truly shows. Listen to Nicholas Gunn‘s brand-new ‘I Feel’ by hitting the ‘Play‘ button on the Spotify player below.
