Thai authorities have seized 1.6 tonnes of ketamine and crystal meth from a pickup truck in central Thailand on April 4. The drugs — 900kg of ketamine and 700kg of crystal meth — were concealed beneath bags of cabbages in the truck bed. Police made the discovery on Saturday when the 39-year-old Thai driver stopped at a petrol station in Ayutthaya province. The man was arrested on drug trafficking charges. He admitted to police that he had been paid 100,000 baht ($3,000) to transport the shipment, which investigators believe entered Thailand from a neighbouring country. Conviction on the charges carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Thailand remains a major transit and destination country for methamphetamine produced in Myanmar. According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, a record 236 tonnes of methamphetamine were seized across East and Southeast Asia in 2024, a 24% increase from the previous year.
