Think of Poseidon, and you might think of the 1972 film, but think again. Pulsar Audio is turning everything upside down with its new EQ, inspired by the Trident A-Range Console. Pulsar Audio, has released a new plug-in, Poseidon, which aims to faithfully emulate the legendary EQ section of the Trident A-Range console. EQ, like the Trident, holds a special reverence as it’s rare and iconic in equal measure. Integral to the sound of artists such as David Bowie, Queen, and Elton John, it is now available to be integral to your own sound. In recent trials of Pulsar Audio, we’ve found their emulations to be as faithful as possible. Two years ago, they released the Massive plugin, which is an emulation of the renowned Manley Massive Passive EQ, which we found to be good value and accurate. The company is making a name for itself with faithful EQ emulations. The A-Range console’s four-band EQ is celebrated for its musical qualities, utilizing a pair of inductor-based mid-band peak filters in combination with high- and low-shelf filters. One of its most striking visual elements is the use of faders for adjusting each band’s level, rather than traditional knobs. The biggest challenge was the unusual filter curves and band interactions. To make this possible, Poseidon addresses this by offering a modern interactive and detailed visual display of the EQ curve for real-time feedback. Further enhancements to the original include frequency controls that are continuously variable rather than limited to fixed points and an expanded frequency range beyond what was originally. The joys of digital emulations, hey? Plus, you have Mid-Side processing, a Gain Scale control, and an Auto-Gain function for maintaining consistent output levels. A neat flexibility feature is that Poseidon incorporates emulations of the A-Range preamp and two output transformer options that enhance low-end harmonics. Coupled with built-in saturation effects, there’s scope for significantly more tonal shaping than originally possible. Poseidon is compatible with Windows 7 and above or macOS 10.8 or higher. It is available in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats, with iLok authorization required. Poseidon is available now at an introductory price of £51 (regular price £85) until October 8th.
