Sophie Hur
Fifteen days before the scheduled release date of her third studio LP as Soccer Mommy, Sophie Allison has shared its fourth single, “newdemo.” The new track follows previous album offerings “Shotgun,” “Unholy Affliction,” and “Bones,” released in March, April, and May, respectively. Sometimes, Forever is due out June 24 on Loma Vista.
Like “Unholy Affliction,” “newdemo” is infused with a heavy dose of Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never). Lopatin produced the forthcoming album, but his fingerprints are less visible on the other two singles. His warped synth work is evident here under Allison’s end-of-world reverie, especially as his unearthly strings blossom beneath a vocal passage that has a strikingly similar melody to a certain Ringo Starr vehicle but sounds far removed from Sgt. Peppers in its new context.
“I didn’t want to make something super depressing without any sense of magic,” Allison explains. “We played around with the space to make the song feel vast, so ’newdemo’ had a huge transformation in the studio. It’s one of my favorites off of the record.”
