In a 2019 profile published in GQ, DMX expressed his disdain for most modern rappers. “They winning with that? Oh, I’m good,” he said. “I’m not mad at them or the artists that’s winning even though they suck.” The quote reflects an artisinal approach to his craft, something that X shared with fellow New York rappers Westside Gunn, Benny The Butcher, and Conway The Machine. All four rappers come together on “Hood Blues,” a new single from DMX’s posthumous album Exodus, which arrives this Friday.

Exodus is executive produced by Swizz Beatz, DMX’s longtime collaborator. Speaking with Apple Music, Beatz said that all of the album’s features except for Moneybagg Yo’s were recorded prior to DMX’s passing. “Everything else X was present and happy for,” he said. “We had the conversation, and I told him, I said, ‘Yo, I know you don’t like a lot of features, but I think it’s time that people should see that other people love you as well and you’re respected by serious, serious artists.'” Exodus will feature JAY-Z, Nas, Bono, Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg, Usher, The LOX, and more.
