U-he Announces Zebra 3: A New Era for Modular Synthesis

u-he has officially released the long-awaited Zebra 3. First spotted in development back in November 2022, the synthesizer underwent a rigorous testing phase, with beta testers gaining access in December 2025. Following a period of refinement, the wait is finally over for the wider production community.

Described by the developers as a “reimagining” of their “wireless modular software synthesizer,” the new iteration retains the familiar four-lane, grid-based architecture of its predecessor while introducing a suite of advanced module types and a completely overhauled drag-and-drop interface. These updates are designed to enhance both sound quality and creative scope.

A significant technical advancement in Zebra 3 is the implementation of Spline-based morphing oscillators. By treating signals as actual curves rather than simple point-to-point segments, the plugin effectively minimizes sonic artifacts. Furthermore, the new FM oscillators now offer optional through-zero operation, providing greater pitch stability and control over complex FM tones under heavy modulation.

Sound designers will find a wealth of new options, including nine distinct noise types and 13 filter models, each featuring multiple response variations. The introduction of modal synthesis—a physical modelling feature that uses resonators to emulate real-world sounds like bells or drums—further expands the instrument’s sonic palette.

The instrument also features Bode-style frequency shifting for ring modulation, enabling more ethereal textures, and a polyphonic stereo EQ/resonator for per-note tone shaping. Other highlights include:

  • Two rendering modes: wavetable (up to 16x unison) or additive (up to 1024 partials)
  • Spectral distortion modifiers for inharmonic and percussive sounds
  • Unified spline editor shared between oscillators and envelopes
  • Noise and Exciter modules for realistic transient modelling
  • Vector mixer for morphing between four sources with loopable XY motion
  • Adaptive interface that displays only active modules
  • 1,200+ factory presets
  • Full MPE and microtuning support

Zebra 3 represents the first major version update in nearly twenty years. As an entirely new build, it does not support backwards compatibility with Zebra 2. The plugin is available now for macOS, Windows, and Linux in CLAP, VST3, AU, and AAX formats. Existing Zebra 2 owners can upgrade for €30, while new licenses are priced at €249.
